Country of Origin Labeling in Europe

Carne Italiana

Carne Italiana

I am in Italy at the moment, and while shopping at several “supermercati” or supermarkets, I observed how the European Union was handling its version of Country of Origin Labeling. Here are some labels I took photos of, and thanks to Google Translation, I was able to determine what everything means.

  • Born in Ireland
  • Raised in France
  • Slaughtered in France
  • Sectioned in Italy

Here is another label:

If you notice on the label on the section below where the countries are listed where the animal was born, raised, slaughtered, and processed, there is a 14-digit traceability number listed here. At this point, somewhere there is a database that contains the history of this animal from birth to this point.

Here are some more photos I took of meat packages and labels. See how good your Italian is to determine the origin of this meat.
