Yeater and Waters receive Carpenter Award

Michael Yeater and Crystal Waters, Ph.D. students in the Meat Science Section in the Department of Animal Science at Texas A&M University, received the Z.L. Carpenter Outstanding Graduate Student Award in Meat Science at the department’s Christmas Dinner and Awards Ceremony on December 17, 2015. The award is named in honor of Dr. Zerle L. Graduate students gain leadership skills in Beef 706

Meat Science graduate students gain valuable leadership skills by working with programs such as Beef 706. Beef 706 is sponsored by the Texas Beef Council on behalf of the Beef Checkoff, is hosted by the Department of Animal Science, and is a producer-education program where those in the beef production industry learn first-hand about the ultimate product they are producing. The 59th Annual Convention of the Southwest Meat Association was held at the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa, July 22-25, 2015, and several Meat Science faculty and students were in attendance making new connections or reconnecting with meat industry leaders, helping with the convention, or receiving scholarships including the Bob Ondrusek Memorial Scholarship, the SMIKids Scholarship, and the SMA Foundation Graduate Scholarship. Beef 101 workshop for June 24-26, 2014 completed

The second Beef 101 of the year was completed on June 24-26, 2014. This year marks the 25th anniversary of Beef 101, and another full crowd was in attendance. 25th anniversary of Beef 101 kicks off with May class

The first Beef 101 was held at Texas A&M University in 1989 at the request of the Texas Beef Council to help its staff better understand the product that it was responsible to market. Word spread about the program, and beef council staff from other states requested that another program be held the next year. FFA/4-H Meat Judging Clinic held at Rosenthal Meat Center, March 29, 2014

The Department of Animal Science hosted the FFA/4-H Meat Judging Clinic, which was held at the Rosenthal Meat Center on Saturday, March 29, 2014. Over 300 FFA and 4-H youth participated in the clinic this year where they had the opportunity to hone their meat judging skills in preparation for upcoming contests this spring. Meat Science graduate students gain valuable experiences leading carcass cutting groups

Since the late 1980s, first with Beef 101, then in the 1990s with Beef 706, and then later on with Pork 101, Meat Science graduate students in the Department of Animal Science have gained valuable teaching experiences through their work as cutting instructors for these courses.
