Students participate in Southwest Meat Association Annual Convention
A number of undergraduate and graduate students from the Department of Animal Science at Texas A&M University participated in the Southwest Meat Association Annual Convention and Suppliers Showcase held at the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort in San Antonio, Texas, July 19 to 22, 2017. Kirby Bohls and Jill Jobe served as student assistants for the convention. Faculty members Ray Riley, Davey Griffin, Leslie Frenzel, and Jeff Savell also were at the convention. Aggie faculty contribute to Lawrie’s Meat Science, 8th edition
Three faculty members in the Department of Animal Science at Texas A&M University provided chapters to the newly revised, Lawrie’s Meat Science, Eighth edition. Rhonda Miller, Kerri Gehring, and Jeff Savell each wrote chapters working with Dr. Fidel Toldrá, the editor of this edition, to complete the publication process. Professor Ralston Lawrie was a world-renown meat scientist and wrote multiple editions of “Meat Science” during his life. Boykin, Eastwood, and Harris present at National Beef Quality Audit workshop
Texas A&M University graduate students, Courtney Boykin, Clay Eastwood, and McKensie Harris, presented the initial findings of their research at the National Beef Quality Audit 2016 Strategy Workshop, which was held December 13-15, 2016 at the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association offices in Centennial, Colorado. Savell receives Marion Teaching Award at Ag Convocation
Jeffrey W. Savell ’75, University Distinguished Professor, Regents Professor, and E.M. “Manny” Rosenthal Chairholder in the Department of Animal Science received the Gail W. and David P. Marion ’65 Teaching Award in Memory of Dr. Richard C. Yeater and Waters receive Carpenter Award
Michael Yeater and Crystal Waters, Ph.D. students in the Meat Science Section in the Department of Animal Science at Texas A&M University, received the Z.L. Carpenter Outstanding Graduate Student Award in Meat Science at the department’s Christmas Dinner and Awards Ceremony on December 17, 2015. The award is named in honor of Dr. Zerle L. Carpenter who began his career at Texas A&M University as an assistant professor of animal science in 1962. All courses are taught in the Kleberg Center on the campus of Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas by Kerri Gehring and Jeff Savell from the Department of Animal Science . Dr. Temple Grandin visits Texas A&M University
Dr. Temple Grandin, professor of animal science at Colorado State University, noted animal handling, behavior, and welfare specialist, and an inspiration and champion for those who are autistic, visited the Department of Animal Science at Texas A&M University, from October 19-22, 2015. Savell selected as a namesake for Fish Camp
Jeff Savell, University Distinguished Professor, Regents Professor, and E.M. “Manny” Rosenthal Chairholder in the Department of Animal Science, was a Fish Camp Namesake for the 2015 incoming freshmen at Texas A&M University. Being selected as a Fish Camp Namesake is one of the highest honors someone can receive at Texas A&M University, and namesakes are chosen based on nominations and selections by students. Lindsey Mehall and Clay Eastwood, Ph.D. students in the Department of Animal Science, presented their research work at the 61st International Congress of Meat Science and Technology (ICoMST) in Clermont-Ferrand, France, August 23-28, 2015.
