Students receive Bob Ondrusek Memorial, SMA Hall of Honor, and SMA Foundation Scholarships at convention

Twenty students from Texas A&M University were the beneficiaries of three different scholarships presented by the Southwest Meat Association at its annual convention: the Bob Ondrusek Memorial Scholarship, the SMA Hall of Honor Scholarship, and the SMA Foundation Scholarship. Harris, Laird, and Nickelson receive Carpenter Award

McKensie Harris, Hannah Laird, and Katy Jo Nickelson received the Z.L. Carpenter Outstanding Graduate Student Award in Meat Science at the Animal Science Awards Banquet on Thursday, April 26, 2018. The Carpenter Award is named in honor of Dr. Zerle L. Carpenter who began his career at Texas A&M University as an assistant professor of animal science in 1962. 2018 Creative Sausage Making Course at TAMU

The fifth annual Creative Sausage Making class, a joint venture between  the Meat Science Section of the Department of Animal Science at Texas A&M University and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, was held on January 12-13, 2018 at the Rosenthal Meat Center.  Thirty participants, representing barbecue companies, foodservice distributors, retailers, chefs and backyard enthusiasts came to learn sausage production from start to finish. Papers presented at ICoMST 2017 in Cork, Ireland

Rhonda Miller, Gordon Carstens, Hannah Laird, Clay Eastwood, and Jeff Savell of the Department of Animal Science at Texas A&M University participated in and presented papers at the 63rd International Congress of Meat Science and Technology (ICoMST), which was held in Cork, Ireland on August 13-18, 2017. Carstens presented his paper during the oral sessions and the rest of the papers were presented during the posters sessions. A number of undergraduate and graduate students from the Department of Animal Science at Texas A&M University participated in the Southwest Meat Association Annual Convention and Suppliers Showcase held at the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort in San Antonio, Texas, July 19 to 22, 2017. The 59th Annual Convention of the Southwest Meat Association was held at the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa, July 22-25, 2015, and several Meat Science faculty and students were in attendance making new connections or reconnecting with meat industry leaders, helping with the convention, or receiving scholarships including the Bob Ondrusek Memorial Scholarship, the SMIKids Scholarship, and the SMA Foundation Graduate Scholarship. Hannah Laird receives SMA Foundation Graduate Scholarship

Hannah Laird, Meat Science graduate student from Dickinson, Texas, received this year’s SMA Foundation graduate scholarship, which was presented to her at the 59th Annual Southwest Meat Association Convention held at the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa, July 22-25, 2015. Hannah is working in the sensory analysis area, and has an undergraduate degree from Baylor University.

Graduate students compete/present at Reciprocal Meat Conference poster session

Seven Meat Science graduate students presented their research work at the poster session of the American Meat Science Association Reciprocal Meat Conference held in Madison, Wisconsin, June 15-18, 2014. Two graduate students, Rachel Glascock and Clay Eastwood, participated in the Poster Competition.
