Grad students provide leadership to Beef 101 program

Beef 101 began in 1989, and from the start, graduate students have played an important role in the success of this program. This is especially evident on day 2 where the participants are assigned to cutting groups, and the grad students lead these groups describing where the cuts are to be made, answering questions about where certain cuts come from, and guidance is given to help preserve the value of the cuts while ensuring the safety of everyone involved when knives and saws are being used. Meat Science Quiz Bowl Team competes at Reciprocal Meat Conference in San Angelo, Texas

The Texas A&M University Quiz Bowl Team competed at the American Meat Science Association Reciprocal Meat Conference at the Angelo State University, San Angelo, Texas on Sunday, June 19, 2016. Two four-member teams went deep in the double-elimination tournament before they were eliminated. The team was selected in May from a group of students who  first attended a Quiz Bowl information meeting in January, 2016. Students sample SPAM® products

This summer in ANSC 307 Meats, during our discussion of processed meats, one of the students had a question about SPAM® and what it was and how it was made. I told the class that I would see about getting some SPAM® from my friends at Hormel to sample in class. Meat Science faculty and students participate in SMA Convention, 2015

The 59th Annual Convention of the Southwest Meat Association was held at the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa, July 22-25, 2015, and several Meat Science faculty and students were in attendance making new connections or reconnecting with meat industry leaders, helping with the convention, or receiving scholarships including the Bob Ondrusek Memorial Scholarship, the SMIKids Scholarship, and the SMA Foundation Graduate Scholarship.
