GSF/McDonald’s Specialized Beef 101 at Texas A&M
At the request of Golden State Foods, Texas A&M Department of Animal Science and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Hosted a specialized Beef 101 program for members of the McDonald’s Corporation and their beef suppliers on August 15-17. Dr. Wayne Morgan, President of Protein Products for Golden State Foods collaborated with Dr. Davey Griffin, professor and Extension Meat Specialist to coordinate the event with a schedule designed to help participants get a snapshot of the beef industry from start to finish. Students attend Southwest Meat Association 60th Convention
Students from the Department of Animal Science at Texas A&M University participated in the 60th Annual Convention and Supplier’s Showcase of the Southwest Meat Association, which was held at the Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort at Cedar Creek, Texas on July 27-30, 2016. Adam Murray and Dylan Tucker served as student assistants at the convention, and Kenna Turner is serving as a summer intern for the Southwest Meat Association. Bob Ondrusek Memorial Scholarship Recipients, 2016-2017
The Bob Ondrusek Memorial Scholarship, which was begun in 2000 by the SMA Foundation, is the greatest source of scholarship funds for undergraduate and graduate students interested in meat science in the U.S. Bob Ondrusek left a lasting impression and impact on so many people through his business, Columbia Packing Company in Dallas, and through his charitable and personal support of the Southwest Meat Association, FFA, 4-H, and many other associations and activities. 4-H Grilling and Smoking Workshop held June 9, 2016
The first 4-H Grilling and Smoking Workshop was held at the Rosenthal Meat Center on June 9, 2016. The workshop was coordinated by Davey Griffin with assistance from Dan Hale, Chris Kerth, and Jeff Savell from the Department of Animal Science. Lisa Fritz and Amanda Smith from H-E-B and Victoria Pilger, Jason Bagley, and Jerry McPherson from Texas Beef Council led some of the activities of the workshop. Hillary Henderson receives Edwards Teaching Award
Hillary Henderson, a M.S. student in Meat Science in the Department of Animal Science at Texas A&M University, was one of three students who received the Ronnie L. Edwards Graduate Student Teaching Award at the department’s Christmas Dinner and Award’s Ceremony on December 17, 2015. Hillary is from Alvin, Texas, and she received her undergraduate degree in animal science at Texas A&M University. Graduate students gain leadership skills in Beef 706
Meat Science graduate students gain valuable leadership skills by working with programs such as Beef 706. Beef 706 is sponsored by the Texas Beef Council on behalf of the Beef Checkoff, is hosted by the Department of Animal Science, and is a producer-education program where those in the beef production industry learn first-hand about the ultimate product they are producing. This summer in ANSC 307 Meats, during our discussion of processed meats, one of the students had a question about SPAM® and what it was and how it was made. I told the class that I would see about getting some SPAM® from my friends at Hormel to sample in class. Hillary Henderson receives SMIKids Graduate Scholarship for 2015-2016
Hillary Henderson, a Meat Science graduate student from Alvin, Texas, is this year’s graduate recipient of the SMIKids Scholarship. Hillary was presented the scholarship at the 59th Annual Southwest Meat Association Annual Convention held at the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa, July 22-25, 2015. The SMIKids Scholarships are given by the Burley Smith family to undergraduate and graduate students at Texas A&M University interested in the meat industry. The 59th Annual Convention of the Southwest Meat Association was held at the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa, July 22-25, 2015, and several Meat Science faculty and students were in attendance making new connections or reconnecting with meat industry leaders, helping with the convention, or receiving scholarships including the Bob Ondrusek Memorial Scholarship, the SMIKids Scholarship, and the SMA Foundation Graduate Scholarship.
