Students sample SPAM® products
This summer in ANSC 307 Meats, during our discussion of processed meats, one of the students had a question about SPAM® and what it was and how it was made. I told the class that I would see about getting some SPAM® from my friends at Hormel to sample in class. The program was sponsored by Standard Meat Company and conducted by the faculty and students of the Department of Animal Science at Texas A&M University. Meat Science Quiz Bowl Team competes at Reciprocal Meat Conference in Lincoln, Nebraska
The Texas A&M University Quiz Bowl Team competed at the American Meat Science Association Reciprocal Meat Conference at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Lincoln, Nebraska on Sunday, June 13, 2015. Two four-member teams went deep in the double-elimination tournament before they were eliminated. The team was selected in May from a group of students who first attended a Quiz Bowl information meeting in January, 2015. Students participate in American Meat Science Association Student Leadership Conference
The American Meat Science Association (AMSA) Student Membership Board of Directors announced that 86 students from 13 universities attended the AMSA 2015 Student Leadership Conference in Springdale, Arkansas on March 13-14, 2015. Texas A&M University students who participated included Michael Berto, Courtney Boykin, Clay Eastwood, Hillary Henderson, Helen Kline, and Michael Yeater. Students began Friday morning, March 13, with tours of the Cryovac and a Tyson poultry processing plant. Gehring to receive Association of Former Students teaching award
Dr. Kerri Gehring, associate professor of animal science and president of the International HACCP Alliance, has been selected as one of the three recipients of the 2014 Association of Former Students Distinguished Achievement Award for Teaching at the College Level. Temple Grandin receives honorary degree from Texas A&M University
Dr. Temple Grandin, professor of animal science at Colorado State University and internationally recognized authority on animal handling and autism, received an honorary degree from Texas A&M University on Friday, August 15, 2014. Dr. Grandin’s contribution to our understanding of animal and human behavior has set new standards for helping people in these diverse areas solve problems. Bob Ondrusek Memorial Scholarship Recipients, 2014-2015
The Bob Ondrusek Memorial Scholarship, which was begun in 2000 by the SMA Foundation, is the greatest source of scholarship funds for undergraduate and graduate students interested in meat science in the U.S. Bob Ondrusek left a lasting impression and impact on so many people through his business, Columbia Packing Company in Dallas, and through his charitable and personal support of the Southwest Meat Association, FFA, 4-H, and many other association and activities. The second Beef 101 of the year was completed on June 24-26, 2014. This year marks the 25th anniversary of Beef 101, and another full crowd was in attendance. 25th anniversary of Beef 101 kicks off with May class
The first Beef 101 was held at Texas A&M University in 1989 at the request of the Texas Beef Council to help its staff better understand the product that it was responsible to market. Word spread about the program, and beef council staff from other states requested that another program be held the next year.
