Dr. Gary C. Smith worked for over three decades with the meat judging program at Texas A&M University. His enthusiasm and ambitions were responsible for bringing unparalleled success to this program. Friends and former students wanted to honor Dr. Smith for his years of dedication to the team by establishing a scholarship in his name.

The purpose of the Gary C. Smith Scholarship is to provide financial assistance to meat judging team members who excel in both the classroom and in the meat cooler. Awarded annually from only the interest generated by the fund, the scholarship provides an opportunity to invest in the future by supporting students today.

To date, 22 students in the Department of Animal Science at Texas A&M have received scholarships from the interest earned on the Gary C. Smith scholarship fund. The scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving undergraduate animal science major on the meat judging team based on financial need, academic excellence, and extracurricular activities.

As the cost of a college education continues to rise dramatically, scholarships are becoming more important to students who have historically depended upon student loans and financial aid to cover the bulk of their educational costs. Scholarships also serve as a method of rewarding outstanding undergraduate students for their academic and extracurricular accomplishments. It is exciting to recognize our undergraduate students who excel academically and have an interest in meat science at Texas A&M.

You may wish to support the Gary C. Smith Scholarship Fund at Texas A&M University by contributing to the scholarship fund through a one-time donation. If you wish to contribute, contact Dr. Jeff W. Savell, Professor and Meat Science Section Leader, at j-savell@tamu.edu or by telephone: 979-845-3935.
