LIPIDS & LIPID METABOLISM

INSTRUCTOR: Stephen B. Smith
OFFICE: 338A Kleberg Center
PHONE: 845-3939
Room 123, Kleberg Center
Tues-Thurs, 12:45 - 2:00

OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  1. Describe the chemical nature of the various classes of lipids and lipid-derived hormones.
  2. Discuss the absorption and metabolism (synthesis/degradation/modification) of fatty acids and lipids.
  3. Integrate the regulation of lipid biosynthesis and obesity.
  4. Describe the relationship between lipid metabolism and cholesterol homeostasis.

PREREQUISITE: BICH 410 or approval of instructor.

REQUIRED READING MATERIAL:

TEXT: The Biology of Fat in Meat Animals: Current Advances. This text will be used to provide supporting material for the lectures, particularly for Sections III & IV.

HANDOUTS. Several handouts will be distributed throughout the semester. These will provide outlines of the lecture material and supplementary reading for Sections I & II.

GRADING:

Exam

Points

Midterm I

100 points

Midterm II

100 points

Midterm III

100 points

Final

100 points

TOTAL

400 points

Each exam will cover one of the four sections. Exams will be based heavily on lecture material. The handouts and assigned reading will provide clarification and additional background. Exams will be a combination of matching, short answer and integrative questions. Grades will be based on examination scores: 90 - 100%, A; 80 - 89%, B; etc.

ATTENDANCE:

Absences for illness or official University business are acceptable. However, the students have full responsibility for the material covered during their absence.
