This summer in ANSC 307 Meats, during our discussion of processed meats, one of the students had a question about SPAM® and what it was and how it was made. I told the class that I would see about getting some SPAM® from my friends at Hormel to sample in class.
I sent an email to Dr. Jerry Cannon, one of my meat science colleagues at Hormel, to see if he could help out. Dr. Cannon said that he would be glad to send a “SPAM® Sampler” so that the students could see and taste the wide array of products in the SPAM® brand.
The greatest surprise for the students and me was the tremendous array of flavors of SPAM®. Students were quick to find their favorites (the original was probably the one that most students really liked), and we just did not know that there were all of these flavors available in the marketplace.
The students enjoyed the SPAM® products, and it was great having the samples to share with the students. I think we will have many more SPAM® eaters in the future!
